Competition Manager - Background Information

Yvonne_Setchell__Schools_Competition_Manager_1.jpgWelcome to the Sunderland School Sport Partnership Competition Section, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Yvonne Setchell and I am the Schools Competition Manager for Sunderland and have been in post since January 2007.

The main aims of a Schools Competition Manager are:
  • Increase the quality of competition and increase the number of quality competitions
  • To work towards meeting the Youth Sport Trust target of raising the percentage of young people taking part in high quality competitions competition by 5% year on year.
  • Establish local delivery of school competition that feeds into the National Competition Priorities as directed by its’ Sports Governing Body.
  •  To work as an integral part of the School Sports Partnership to help to deliver ambitions of the PESSYP strategy incorporating the five hour offer and extend the opportunity to engage in competition.
Competition Managers have been given twenty one priority sports which have or are currently going through the National Competitions Panel:

Approved
Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.
Pending
Judo, Lacrosse, Orienteering, Rowing and Squash .

Each of the above sports has a National Governing Body Matrix which highlights Priority Competitions, Resources, PESSYP Links, Identifies Strategic Deliverers and Priority Areas and outlines the role of Competition in the development of each sport.
In addition to the National Governing Body Matrices the Youth Sport Trust has issued a series of documents to support the delivery of priority competitions:
  • National Competition Calendar 2010/2011
  • National Competition Manager Work Programme
  • National Competition Manager Flowchart
  • National Competition County Areas Priority Sports 2010/2011

There are now two hundred and twenty five Competition Managers in post across the country covering forty nine county areas and all four hundred and fifty school sport partnerships. The three Sunderland School Sport Partnerships (Biddick, Farringdon and Houghton Kepier) are part of the Tyne and Wear County Schools Sports Partnership. There are a further four Schools Competition Manager in Tyne and Wear (Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside and South Tyneside).
