Key Stage 2 Swimming

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Pace themselves in floating and swimming with challenges related to speed, distance and personal survival.
  • Swim unaided for a sustained period over a distance of at least 25m.
  • Use a recognised arm and leg action, lying on back and front.
  • Use a range of recognised strokes and personal survival skills. Front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, sculling, floating, surface diving.

School Sport Swimming Grant

To support the objectives above and following the success of the Top Up Swimming programme, the DCSF have awarded a further £8.25 million for delivery between 2008-2011.

Each School Sport Partnership now runs a swimming project aimed at improving the quality and delivery of school swimming and at increasing the % of pupils who reach the KS2 attainment target.

This funding can be used for:

  • additional teachers
  • additional lessons
  • resources
  • transport
  • pool hire
